Let’s Celebrate the Beauty of Old Louisville

Old Louisville Real Estate, Bruce Moore, Realtor

No doubt about it, Old Louisville is one of Louisville’s most beautiful neighborhoods!  The houses are really what sets this neighborhood apart from others in the city.

Made up of mostly Brick Victorian Architecture, it is the 3rd largest Designated Historical Neighborhood in the entire United States!

Old Louisville Real Estate, Bruce Moore, Realtor

Not only that but despite its up and downs ….. the Great Flood of 37, Tornado of 74 and some history of neglect ….. most of the houses remain intact and are still in great shape.  Old Louisville is coming back from the downturn it took starting during WWI when owners started to subdivide the houses into apartments.  There are still quite a few old house/apartments but the practice has stopped and is being reversed thanks to the Old Louisville Neighborhood Association and the conversion into a Historical District.

On May 16th and 17th, Old Louisville is celebrating its neighborhood by inviting others to the
2nd Annual Old Louisville Springfest

Organizers are expecting about 7,000 people to visit the neighborhood. There will be bands, vendor booths, plenty of food and drink including the Old Louisville Slushie for adults which is a blend of bourbon, orange juice concentrate and lemonade concentrate.  Yumm!! And the newest addition to the festival is a Beer Garden!

And while you’re there, take a peek at some of the Beautiful Homes and Condos For Sale in Old Louisville!

I am very proud to be listing a beautiful House at 1208 S. 1st street and I will be holding an open house on Sunday from 2-4.

House for sale in Old Louisville, Bruce Moore Realtor

Come on by and pick up a flyer on Friday or Saturday and come back for the open house on Sunday to tour this beautiful home and say Hi!

I am not going to tell you about Hand in Hand Ministries

Hand in Hand Ministries Louisville
I am not going to tell you about Hand in Hand Ministries!

A special guest post by my friend, Phaedra King

Except to say, Hand in Hand believes that all people deserve life’s essentials – food, water, clothing, shelter, education and medical care.  Their primary focus is to provide these essentials to people in Appalachia, Belize and Nicaragua.

Hand in Hand Ministries Louisville
Hand In Hand Ministries
I could talk about how HIH builds homes for families in Belize who are homeless or living in substandard conditions.  I could sing praises about their Outreach Center, which provides daycare, medical care and educational services for children marginalized by poverty and disease.  Or I could give you statistics from the many other wonderful services HIH provides in Central America.  But I won’t.I won’t go into details about the Pathway to Change program, a scholarship program which makes top-quality education available to children who might otherwise fall through the cracks in Nicaragua. Or the home repair program, food pantry, computer and GED classes offered through HIH in Appalachia. Why won’t I tell you about Hand in Hand Ministries?  I won’t tell you because, on paper, Hand in Hand sounds like a million other non-profit organizations.  My words alone will never be enough endorsement for the magnitude of benevolence Hand and Hand provides.I will, however, tell you about what sets Hand in Hand Ministries apart from other organizations.

Immersion Trips

For years, I worked at a non-profit organization which operated with a coalition of charitable organizations to pool efforts in fundraising and support.  Every year I’d watch in awe as we facilitated the transfer of millions of dollars in donations from individuals to non-profits.  Those non-profits, in turn, would use the funds to help people. At the end of the year, when all the money was counted and disbursed, I would congratulate my co-workers on a job well done.  And then, honestly, I would sit and wonder “what is actually being done with all that money? How do I know it is really helping?”

But that’s how it works, we give money to the cause of our choice and cross our fingers that the money is being put to good use.  I am in no way suggesting that it isn’t, but there is always that “how do I know” feeling after you hand over your check. Well, this is exactly what sets Hand in Hand Ministries apart.   Oh, we’ll take your money and, as a board member, I can personally guarantee that it will be put to good use!  But, you don’t have to trust me; you can see for yourself.

Hand in Hand offers immersion trips to Appalachia, Belize and Nicaragua.  You don’t have to wonder about the homes being built in Belize.   With an immersion trip, you can go to Belize and help build one of those homes.  If you are passionate about education, you can take an immersion trip to Nicaragua and meet the children in the Pathways to Change program.  Or, if you want to stay closer to home, you can take an immersion trip to Appalachia and help a family who desperately needs home repairs.

When you return home, you won’t need to congratulate yourself on a job well done, because you will have been transformed.  Both your heart and your mind will have gone through a beautiful metamorphosis, the likes of which you never believed possible.

So no, I’m not going to tell you about Hand in Hand Ministries, I’m going to invite you to come see for yourself.   Go on an immersion trip (or 2 or 3).  Change someone’s life for the better and possibly your own life in the process!  But beware; you will never look at life the same way again.

Hey Louisville….Do You Know Where Your Yard Waste is Going??

Louisville, Do you know where your yard waste is going??

When the City of Louisville started collecting it they promised to recycle and compost our yard waste, right? Well, that’s NOT what’s happening. Since 2012, our collected yard waste is going into the landfills. That’s right, THE LANDFILLS!
Louisville Realtor Bruce Moore
Why? Because the waste is collected in plastic bags. That’s a load of compost, if you ask me! But all is not lost. Tim Darst of MoveOn.Org has created a petition to convince Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer to stop this insanity.“Our yard waste has been going into the landfill since 2012 because it contains plastic bags. The Mayor can stop this with the waive of his pen. Call Mayor Greg Fischer now at 502-574-2003 and tell him he needs to ban plastic bags from the yard waste.”What else can you do? It’s easy…. just sign the Petition, letting Mayor Fischer know that this is not acceptable. I’m signing, won’t you?

Louisville is More than just the Weather

I admit it, I am not a big fan of Winter.   It has not always been like this for me.  I grew up and spent most of my life in San Diego, California. The weather is not as much of a factor there and we were always outdoors unless we were sleeping or eating.

Winter in Louisville, Bruce Moore, Louisville Realtor

Louisville, Kentucky can be quite a bit more challenging to stay outside.  With temperatures plummeting and still quite a few weeks left of winter, it is a struggle to get out!

However, Louisville is so much more than the weather. We have lots of beautiful parks, the many great restaurants, art, music. We all know this is not a boring city.   It is one of the best cities in the Midwest and has so much to offer.

Louisville Realtor, Bruce Moore

And from a real estate perspective, people are still moving, buying and selling houses! Looking forward to 2014, I can see this year is going to be the busiest ‘buyers’ year in quite awhile.  And … have you seen house prices in other cities?   They just do not compete with our prices here.

The low cost of living (Expatistan) puts Louisville on the forefront of places to live as being affordable, fun, and usually NOT that cold.

So, next time you are out in another city, try telling other people about Louisville.  They might shrug about it unless they have been here.  Because everyone loves it!

Get outside and enjoy our wonderful Louisville!

Louisville Hip and Trendy? Why yes, we are!

Louisville Hip and Trendy? Why yes, we are!

Louisville, Kentucky … Possibility City and gaining national attention again. Thrillist.com included Louisville in its ‘America’s Most Hipster Cities’ list.

Louisville Realtor, Bruce Moore

According to Thrillist …. “Louisville’s all about bourbon, BBQ, and bands that play indie rock. Oh, and beer. It’s home to rockers My Morning Jacket and VHS or Beta (who, ironically, now live in Brooklyn), is the birthplace of Hunter S. Thompson, and actually has restaurants that don’t require staff uniforms (!!!) — so don’t even think about complimenting the waitress on her flair. The city’s best hotel, 21C, is a “boutique-cum-contemporary art museum”.

Oh, and did you hear we may be getting zip lines across the Ohio River? What a great idea! Insider Louisville reports that with the popularity of the Big Four Bridge, the idea of zip lines across the river is now being discussed. Louisville already has Mega Caverns, the first underground zip lines. So why not zip across the Ohio? I’m all for it!

Douglass Loop in Louisville is hopping with new Restaurants

Douglass Loop in Louisville is hopping with new Restaurants!

The restaurant scene has suddenly come to life over on Douglass Loop in the Belknap neighborhood on Louisville, Kentucky.

A few businesses had closed in the past year (Corner door, Flower shop, etc) but with the opening of Havana Rhumba, this may have spurred more restaurants to think about opening here.

Highlands of Louisville News, Bruce Moore, Realtor

The first one which may open by the end of the year is  a place called Loop 22 in the old Corner Door location.  This is run by the same folks that brought us “Game” and “Hammerheads”.

The Great Flood Brewery (not a restaurant) brings on another local brewery and will be located next to North End Café.   There are still a few more vacant spots and hopefully these additions will bring on more to this already hot spot in the Highlands.
