Prepare your house for winter!

Like it or not, winter is coming. Is your house ready?  There are some simple things you can do to prepare for a more comfortable and affordable cold season.

Have your chimney cleaned – Very important! A dirty chimney is not only inefficient, it can be a major fire hazard.

Prepare your house for winter, Bruce Moore Realtor

Check the furnace – All furnaces should be cleaned and inspected once a year by a professional. A clean furnace is more efficient not to mention safe.

Seal the windows and doors –  Keep the cold air out by sealing all doors and windows with weatherstripping.

Use your blinds – They’re not just for decoration, you know. When the sun shines on your windows, raise the blinds. Lower them after dark to keep the warmer air in.

Reverse your ceiling fans – Warm air rises so setting your blades to push the air down will make a room feel more comfortable.

Just a few things you can do to save money and be more comfortable in your home this year.

What does all that real estate jargon really mean??

We’ve all seen the yard signs. “Waterfront Property!” ….. “Charming” … “Convenient Location”. But does it really mean what you think it does? Waterfront property… a lovely lake right outside your wrap-around porch? Or maybe it means the backyard floods.

We all take some liberties and embellish, don’t we? That fish was how big? And yes, we Realtors are sometimes guilty of the same. Hey, we have to sell all kinds of houses, right? The good, the bad and the ugly. But, this list is just for fun… so please don’t take it as gospel!

“Diamond in the rough” … Needs way too much work

“I’m beautiful inside” …. Butt-ugly on the outside

 “Don’t curb appraise” … See #2

“Perfect for a walk-out basement” … Goat property

“Endless possibilities” …. Needs a bottomless checkbook

“Cozy” … Tiny!

“Charming” … Tiny!

“Great Starter Home” … 4 walls and a roof but not much else

“Low maintenance Yard” … Dirt

“Unique” … More butt-ugly

“Move in ready” … Very outdated, shag carpet anyone?

“Convenient location” … Backs up to I-65

Again, just for fun. Ready to go out and find your own “Diamond in the Rough”? Call me, I’ll find the perfect house for YOU!

True story…

Bruce Moore’s assistant, Annette here.

Years ago we bought a great home in the country. Closed the deal, moved in, all was great. Until about a month later. It’s early November and the temp had dipped enough to turn on the furnace. Heard it kicking on and it just ran and ran but it never actually started blowing. We looked at the furnace – didn’t really know what we were looking at but you know, go kick the tires and see if that helps.

Finally, I hand my husband the flashlight and send him in the yard to check out the propane tank. I see the light bouncing around in the bushes and finally he comes back out and says ‘Where’s the tank? I thought it was over there.’  I go in and look, sure enough, no propane tank.

Turns out that neither Realtor in our transaction had much experience with propane. (No, Bruce was not one of them). Our Realtor thought the gas went with the house, the listing agent assumed it belonged to the Sellers. The Sellers canceled their account with the gas company and there went our tank and our heat.

Moral of the story….. don’t assume anything! And keep electric heaters (and a flashlight) on standby.
